The GuatemalaN Adoption Program

Adoption Baby Guatemala

If you want to adopt in Guatemala, you're not alone. For years, Guatemala has been one of the top countries for sending healthy boys and girls. Unfortunately many children are placed for adoption due to conditions of abject poverty. Many Guatemalan families have several children, and may not be in the financial position to feed another child. Thus, these children are placed for adoption, typically with a private attorney.

Advantages of Guatemalan Adoptions

One reason why a Guatemalan adoption is so favorable is the host home care that the children receive. Children from Guatemala may be placed in a host-home immediately after birth or later, and they are eligible for adoption without any of the waiting periods prevalent in many other inter-country adoption programs. After completing a thorough legal process, including DNA testing of both the child and mother, children are adopted from Guatemala at anywhere from five to nine months of age.

The process for completing Guatemalan adoptions is straightforward, and the procedures with which to comply are relatively easy and understandable. The adoption process is relatively quick, with normal processing time from start to finish of approximately four to nine months.

Adopting from Guatemala generally involves two distinct steps and multiple approvals:

Step one: Preparation of documents; obtain approval by the Guatemalan and American authorities; and receive the referral of a child.

Step two: Travel to Guatemala to complete the adoption and return home with your child.

Step one is performed primarily by the prospective adoptive parents and Adoption House, and includes efforts to assist you in understanding the adoption process, preparing for the foreign born child, and securing all required documentation and approvals. During this process, three approvals are received:

Approval from a licensed agency in the form of a home study;

Approval from the United States government (CIS) in the form of an advanced processing petition;

Approval from the Guatemalan government.

A dossier (country application) is compiled for the Guatemalan court's review and approval. Adoption House will assist you in obtaining all of these approvals. We will walk you through each of the above steps and file the necessary applications with CIS and Guatemala on your behalf.

Step two is performed in Guatemala and includes assisting with travel plans, coordinating the in-country efforts for the adoption and walking the adoptive parents through the in-country adoption process. Our program coordinators have established a working relationship with the Guatemalan courts and authorities and our facilitators are knowledgeable in the adoption process. In addition, we use travel professionals in Guatemala who are experienced in all aspects of international travel and tourism. These combined experiences are essential for the adoption process to be a success.
